Wisdom 16:18

At one point the flame did die down, so that it might not destroy the creatures that had been sent but only punish them. The ungodly noticed and realized it was God’s judgment that was hunting them down.
For at one time, the fire was mitigated, that the beasts which were sent against the wicked might not be burned, but that they might see and perceive that they were persecuted by the judgment of God.
At one point the flames died down, so that they wouldn't destroy the creatures sent to punish the ungodly. Those people had to learn that they were being overtaken by your judgment.
Then the flame was tempered so that the beasts that were sent upon the wicked might not be burnt up, but that these might see and know that they were struck by the judgment of God;
At one time the flames would die down so that they would not consume the creatures inflicted upon the wicked, but that, seeing this, the latter might know that they were being pursued by the judgment of God.
At one time the flame was restrained, so that it might not consume the creatures sent against the ungodly, but that seeing this they might know that they were being pursued by the judgement of God;

For why sometime the fire was mild [or tamed], lest the beasts should be burnt, that were sent to (or sent against) wicked [or unpious] men; but that they seeing should know, that they suffer persecution by the doom of God.
